 WGRC D12 LDTF Newsletter 2009

The Walkinstown Greenhills Resource Centre first opened its doors in the spring of 2004.   Our aim is captured in our mission statement, which is “to assist the local community through a holistic approach to take responsibility for drug related issues and address the cause and symptoms of substance misuse in the area”.

(The Walkinstown Greenhills Resource Centre’s Report of 2004 -05)

This broad aim informs our day to day work as we offer responses to drugs misuse through a range of interventions targeted at individuals and groups.

What we do

We provide a frontline response to the public with information, advice, general referral and specific referrals for e.g. for under 13 year old children.

Our therapeutic interventions consist of. counselling and complementary therapies for teenagers and adults with addiction and their family members. These services are also available to members of our local communities that seek support for life issues such as stress, loss and bereavement.

Our recent work

Over the past two years we have provided one to one interventions for more than two hundred people. For example eighty four people that are affected by addiction. Our service for teenagers engaged fifty six children (between the ages of thirteen and eighteen) for one to one counselling. The parents of these teenagers also get a support service. For children under thirteen we supported therapeutic interventions at a specialist agency for nineteen children.

We have also provided counselling for fifty one members of our local that sought support for life issues such as stress, loss and bereavement.

How people engage with us

Many of our referrals come by word of mouth from other users of our services. Others come as referrals from e.g. GP’s, Health Care Professionals, Social Workers, Home School Liaison Officers and local Gardai.

Our therapeutic team

The therapeutic team is made up of 7 counsellors and 2 complementary therapists.
