The Dublin 12 Local Drugs Task Force was established in 1997 to facilitate a more effective response to the drug problem in the Dublin 12 area.
In line with the Government’s drugs policy the aim of Task Forces is to provide an integrated response to the problems posed by drugs misuse. The key objectives of the Dublin 12 LDTF are in line with government policy and include:
- to reduce the number of people turning to drugs in the first instance through comprehensive education and prevention programmes;
- to support measures aimed at reducing the harm to those actively using drugs;
- to provide appropriate treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare for those who are dependent on drugs;
- to have appropriate mechanisms in place aimed at reducing the supply of illicit drugs;
- to ensure that an appropriate level of accurate and timely information is available to inform the response to the drug problem; and
- to support families and communities affected by drug use.
The key policy framework for Dublin 12 LDTF is the National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008 (NDS). The main aim of the NDS is:
“To significantly reduce the harm caused to individuals and society by the misuse of drugs through a concerted focus on supply reduction, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation and research”.
