DRUGS AWARENESS WEEK 2010

11th – 15th October 2010
 
The folowing events were held to increase
awareness of issues relating to
substance use.

Tuesday 12th October

PARENT DRAMA WORKSHOPS, Rosary College, Crumlin, Dublin 12.
A facilitated workshop session about ‘ discusing drugs with young people’. went really well. Six parents attended and fourteen students from first and second year were selected. The interaction between parents and students was very good. The young people gained a lot from the experience.

YOUTHREACH COCAINE AWARENESS SESSION, Armagh Road – A pre-launch session was held to unveil the finished Youthreach Cocaine Awareness DVD in Youthreach. The event celebrated how well the whole Cocaine awareness initiative had gone from start to finish. The parents and Youthreach young people who were involved over the year attended. One of the actors is now acting in a movie. The initiative was a confidence building exercise for the young people involved. Brid Casey spoke about the cocaine awareness initiative at the session. Ben, the film’s director, attended.

Wednesday 13th October

DUBLIN 12 LOCAL POLICING FORUM PUBLIC MEETING
Mother McAuley Centre, Curlew rd, Drimnagh. Time: 7.00pm

This October D12 LPF initial Public Meeting was seen as a success. Dial to stop drug dealing campaign was re-launched. Garda, City and County council services gave update presentations. Public who attended raised queries including topics such as Bonfires, Gangs & Parks. Relevant statutory services are to follow up on the publics’ requests and queries raised. 35 people attended meeting ( 23 public, 12 Forum members).

Thursday 14th October

INITIATIVES LAUNCH ; St John Bosco Youth Centre, Drimnagh.
Guest Speaker: Minister Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Aff, Pat Carey.

A. Launch of ESL Cocaine Awareness Education initiative. Screening of New Options New Choices Cocaine Awareness DVD. Chair of Task Force introduced the speakers. Celia Flanagan & Brid Casey introduced the initiative. 40+ people attended launch, including families of Young people involved in production of video. Age group was over 16, due to content of video.

B. Launch of Dublin 12 Family Support initiatives –

Update on Progress of D12 Family support network. 30-40 people attended Family support launch, mainly service providers, public reps and family support group members. Chair of Task Force introduced the various speakers ( as above). Minister Carey spoke highly about the importance of all the areas the D12 Family Support initiative addressed.

C. Performance by Lana Turner dance group.
Launches were followed by performance by Lana Turner dance group. Young People from Drimnagh who use Bosco activities attended. The event was a huge success with over 200 people in attendance. It was well structured because it was in a short space of time.

Friday 15th October
CLOSING EVENT ; Scoil Colm, Armagh Rd, Crumlin.

Running order:

 Performance by Rosary College Choir & Orchestra
 Screening and official launch of the Youthreach Cocaine Awareness DVD
 Schools Cocaine Awareness facilitated session

This was a great success with a large attendance from students and some parents. St Agnes Choir sang and performed beautifully. This was a successful event with approx 100 5th year students from Rosary College and the Assumption secondary schools in attendance.
The facilitated session on Cocaine went well and young people interacted well with the facilitator. Youth reach students shouted out answers throughout the session because they had learned a lot from the Youth reach cocaine awareness programme. They demonstrated the positive learning from participating on the programme.

ADDITIONAL 2010 DRUG AWARENESS ACTIVITIES

YOUNG PEOPLE INFO DAY – BRU Youth Centre, Crumlin;.
Marion timetabled a slot for first, second and third year Rosary College students to walk up to the Bru with their teachers. This was a positive and informative for the teachers and students.

SCHOOLS QUIZ:
All Dublin 12 schools were sent a drugs related quiz asking that first and Second year students be invited to partake in the quiz during the 2010 D12 Drugs Awareness Week.

SCHOOLS TREASURE HUNT – All secondary schools in Dublin 12 with first year students. THe Treasure Hunt Theme was around Drugs.

SERVICE PROMOTION
A. Promotion of Rehabilitation services by Walkinstown Greenhills Resource Centre in ASHLEAF SC.
Handing out leaflets to people passing by worked well and was a positive experience. Thursday 14th Oct was selected as this is a busy day in the Shopping centre.

B. Promotion of Rehabilitation services by Addiction Response Crumlin in CRUMLIN POST OFFICES.

Thursday 14th Oct was selected to promote outside the Post Offices because it is ‘Labour’ day for large numbers of people, including elderly and for children’s allowance. ARC designed wallet sized foldable leaflets, with details of their services. ARC dedicated whole day to promotion and spoke to large numbers of people. ARC got lots of follow up calls from the promotion which led to increase in referrals and people taking up service.
